How do you do an overall cleaning on a papasan cushion?

Q: My husband and I bought a double papasan chair for a great price and it is in great condition all except for a few stains and a bit of a musty smell. I have a blanket over it now but I want to have it cleaned. Do I take it to a dry cleaners or do I have to have an upholstery cleaner come and do it? I would get a new cushion but they are over a hundred dollars and it seems such a waste to throw this out on account of the bit of the musty smell.

A: You don't say what the cover is made of leather or fabric. But, if it is made of fabric, there is a product called Foleys Upholstery Cleaner available at the home depot that will remove the stains. To remove the musty smell, sprinkle 20- mule team Borax on it and leave it for 24 hours (on both sides one at a time) then vacuum it away. Fabreeze will work short term but a musty smell will return as you sit on it over time. You may have an internal mold or mildew problem which is in the cushion, not on the fabric covering it. Then you will need a product called DampRid which I've only found at Lowes, spray it on and it kills the spores and leaves a protective barrier that prohibits further growth. Treat both sides and allow to dry. It won't hurt the fabric, it is not toxic and is odorless. If it is leather, Jubliee will clean and protect it, but won't remove the musty smell. For leather, once you clean, protect & moisturize it, you can try putting it in the sun to remove the musty odor, but if it is in the cushion fiber you may not be able to remove it effectively.

Cleaning a papasan chair?

Q: My roommates cat pissed on my papasan chair. I know I can't fully get it out, as it is cat pee, but what is the best way to clean the cushion all the way through? It is a huge spot, soaked all the way through to the other side and left a whitish-yellowish ring. It is a dark navy blue color and one side is embroidered and one side is plain. It is absolutely disgusting, and the smell is horrendous too. Help? Please??

A: see if you can remove the cover form the cushion. You may have to cut a seam and re-sew it. Wash the cover first, by hand, with warm water and gentle soap, then follow with the local odor eliminator stuff from your pet store. The cushion material might be more difficult. It might wash or not, depending on what it is made from, so be ready to by new stuffing. If it will wash, use a good strong vinegar rinse, and let it soak in the vinegar for a bit, maybe half and hour or more. Rinse, then dry, and re-assemble. Hose the chair itself off as well, outside, with hose and spray bottle of soap, then the odor juice stuff. Rinse again, let dry.
